わたしのお茶/ That was my tea.

日本とくらべるとトロントにはホームレスが多くてしかも結構若いホームレスの人が多い。日本だとおじさんのイメージだけど20代っぽい人がごろごろいる。単独で行動していても、夜になると皆で公園にあつまって寝ているよう。冬になったらいったいどうするんだろうかとちょっと心配でもある。物乞いをしている人も結構たくさんいて、見ているとわりとご飯とかをあげている人をよく見るのでご飯には困っていなさそう。それから驚きなのが、半分以上の確率で犬を連れている。自分も食べられないのにどうやって犬を食べさせるんだろうか、と思う一方で犬がいたほうが、人々の哀れみの心を得やすく、結果食べ物を得られるのだろうかと思ったりもする。そんなに皆アグレッシブではなくて、ダンボールに「助けてください」と書いていたり、小銭のはいった紙コップをチャリンチャリンしていたりする。カナディアンの友達は通り過ぎる時だいたい「ごめんね」っていって通り過ぎているけどこのSorryのニュアンスがごめんねなのかはちょっとわからない。

一度お茶を飲みながらあるいていたときに若いクレイジーな感じの女の人に、「めっちゃ喉が渇いてるからそれよこしな！はやくはやく！」みたいな感じで言われたことがある。別に怖い感じじゃなかったけど、喉が渇いているならまあ仕方ないか、と思ってあげた。ぐいっと奪われてそれでおしまい。歩いているうちに、なんだか腹がたってきた。自分が朝から働いた1日の終わりに、帰宅中の一服として楽しみにしていたお茶だったし、たかが1杯のお茶で、他人にくれてやっても痛くもかゆくもないものだけど、なんだかなあ。声を荒げればお茶の1杯や2杯すぐにもらえるのかもしれないけど、あの人にそれを飲む資格はない。せめてお礼くらい言えよな。などと心の中で悪態をつきながら帰ったのでした。

Here in Toronto, there are many homeless people. Surprisingly, many of them are younger than I thought. In Japan, most of them are over 40 years, but in here 20's 30's,  I guess. They seem to sleep in parks or roads. In winter, it will be snow here. I don't know where they're gonna sleep. Some people give them foods. It is surprising as wel. And also a lot of homeless people have dogs. Iam not sure how the can feed them. Perhaps, having some pets make people supply food more than without pets. Because it will be easy to have sympathy to homeless people if they have dogs.

Once, I had given my tea to a young homeless lady. She yelled at me "Give me the tea. Hurry. I am so thirsty. Pass me the tea." I was not scared, but it seemed to be better to pass it to her, so I gave her. That's all. She had said nothing. Wow. Perhaps, for her, it is easy to get a cup or two cups of tea or coffee by yelling. But in my case, no. By working from morning to evening, finally, I had got the tea. I had looked forward to having the tea, of course. That was my small but important present for me. If you want to have some tea, BUY IT YOURSELF. She didn't deserve my tea at all. She should have said 'Thank you.' at least, shouldn't she?
